I've started reading Deuteronomy again. And God speaking to Israel out of the fire on the mountain made such a deep impression on me. In Deut 4:11 and 12 it says:
And you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire to the heart of the heavens - darkness, cloud and thick darkness. And JHWH spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard a voice of words, but saw no form. You only heard a voice. To me this is God’s heart of passion, burning. Yes, He is a consuming fire. But He has a heart of passion. And the passion, the deepest desire and longing of His heart, is expressed in Deut 5:29 and 33
Deut 5:29 Oh, that they had such a heart in them, to fear ME, and to guard all my commands always, so that it might be well with them and with their children forever!
:33 Walk in all the ways which JHWH your Elohim has commanded you, so that you live and it be well with you. And you shall prolong your days in the land which you possess.
- a desire that we would have the heart to realise who He is, worship Him, obey His laws, with the result that it would be well with us. So, that is His ultimate desire for us: our wellbeing!! What more can you ask for??
I made this small artwork in an effort to express the impression the above Scripture made on me. Note the heart-shape of the fire:
